Brittain River Eelgrass Transplanting

Brittain River Estuary is located on the west shore of Jervis Inlet, approximately 28km north of the village of Egmont, BC (Appendix 1, Map 1). Eelgrass habitat was created within the Brittain River Estuary to compensate for impacts to fish and fish habitat resulting from the construction and operation of a BC Timber Sales (BCTS) Brittain River log handling facility of approximately 340m2. Initial transplantation of eelgrass began in 2008 and completed in 2010. Monitoring assessments using SCUBA and Remotely Operated Vehicle in 2015 quantified a total functioning eelgrass habitat area of 823m2. This project was deemed successful because 7 years after the impact, there was a net gain in functional ecosystem habitat.
